A Light Somewhere
One hundred laps for the NHS

In April 2020, during the first COVID-19 lockdown in the United Kingdom, 99-year-old World War II veteran Captain Tom Moore began walking laps of his Bedfordshire garden with a walking frame.
His goal was modest: raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by completing 100 lengths of a 25-metre path before his 100th birthday. He had been treated by the NHS himself, and wanted to say thank you.
Then the story spread. Media appearances followed. Donations poured in from around the world. By the time his JustGiving page closed on his birthday, the campaign had raised nearly £33 million from more than 1.5 million donors — a record for the platform.
Captain Tom completed the 100 laps before his birthday, with a guard of honour and a country watching. The money supported NHS staff, volunteers, and patients through NHS Charities Together.
His walk was never meant to be famous. It was meant to be kind. That is why it still lands softly: proof that steady steps, taken for someone else, can travel farther than we expect.
